Another innovative surgical procedure performed by specialists from the enel-med Centre Hospital. Dr Cezary Michalak was the first orthopaedist in Poland to use the PyroDisk endoprosthesis in his patient. This is another treatment for thumb osteoarthritis, or rhizarthrosis.

Rhizarthrosis is one of the most common degenerative changes in the hand area. Abrasion of the thumb saddle joint affects elderly patients – it is estimated that this type of problem occurs in one in 4 women and one in 10 men over the age of 65. However, due to the modern lifestyle, in which mobile phones and tablets play an increasingly important role, degenerative diseases of the thumb will start to affect younger and younger patients.

Surgical treatment of rhizarthrosis is possible with the use of several types of joint endoprostheses, differing mainly in the material from which they were made, their shape and how they work. The enel-med Centre Hospital is the first facility in Poland to use the Ascension PyroDisk endoprosthesis, which has been used in Europe for several years.

The prosthesis is made of a damage-resistant and extremely bone-friendly pyrocarbon, which is a carbon derivative. The unique material and shape of the endoprosthesis assume a slight intraoperative bone removal, ensure movement in the joint, as well as a good functional outcome and resistance to injuries.

The PyroDisk endoprosthesis has never before been used in Poland. The first, innovative procedure involving it was performed by Dr Cezary Michalak, a surgeon from enel-med Centre Hospital in Warsaw. Congratulations!
